A large industrial laundry employed wide channel ultrafiltration (UF) to remove oil and grease from wash water used for garments, linens, washing wipes, mops, mats and uniforms. Prefiltration removed lint while an oil-water coalescer separated free oil prior to the process tank.

In most cases, the wash and rinse water from garments, linens and floor mats simply require conventional screen separation of solids before sewer discharge. Wash water from oiled mops will require treatment before discharge with rinse wastewater generally not requiring treatment. In most cases, the waste wash water from shop towels will require treatment since it typically contains oil, grease, heavy metals and volatile organics. The final rinses, after the wash, of the shop towels may not require treatment.

Segregation of those streams outlined above that actually requires treatment to meet discharge standards make the cost of treatment manageable. The actual volume of water that requires treatment in the average industrial laundry will range from 15% to and typically not more than 45%. Segregation also has the added benefit of reducing the treatment requirements due to the dilution factor provided by the balance of the untreated wastewater that contains little or none of the contaminants that represent a problem.


Chemical vs. Membrane

The chemical method of treatment for this type of waste stream was conventional coagulation followed by flocculation and dewatering using a filter press or a rotary vacuum filter. However, this approach is prone to upsets when the waste stream changed it produced large volumes of sludge for disposal.
